On Wednesday February 27, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Cho Hee-yong, awarded the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit Medal to Mr. Barry Devolin, Member of Parliament of Canada and Co-Chair of the Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group (CKIFG).
The Order of Diplomatic Service Merit is awarded to a foreign public official for their significant contributions in strengthening friendly relations with the Republic of Korea.
The awarding ceremony was attended by more than 80 people including Mr. Devolin’s family members, close colleagues, Korean War Veterans, members of Parliament, and the Korean-Canadian community.
In his congratulatory speech, Ambassador Cho emphasized the growth of bilateral relations to that of a comprehensive partnership based on staunch alliance, ideal partnership, and shared values as like-minded countries in light of the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations and the 60th Anniversary of Korean War Armistice.
Ambassador Cho outlined Mr. Devolin’s contribution to Korea-Canada relations such as promoting inter-parliamentary exchanges between Korea and Canada since 2005 in chairing the CKIFG; contributing to growth of Korean community within Canada since 2006 as ‘Government Liaison with the Korean Community’; raising awareness of issues involving the Korean peninsula within Canadian Parliament; contributing tremendously to the enhancement of Canada and Korea’s special partnership based on his continued support which stems from his teaching experience at a university in Korea.
Ambassador Cho said that he looks forward to Mr. Devolin’s continued efforts in strengthening bilateral relations.
In his speech, Mr. Devoln expressed gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Korea and those colleagues who helped him in his endeavors, and addressed the audience with a vow to continue to work towards the enhancement of Korea-Canada relations, and to actively work towards the democratization of North Korea, as well as addressing the human rights issue in North Korea through the active participation in the International Parlimentarians’ Coalition for North Korean Refugees and Human Rights.
